Richmond Print E-mail

Just outside of Hobart is the little town of Richmond. The town is well preserved and has undergone a change from a small residential community surrounding the oldest jail in Australia to a tourist commercial center. The little town is full of gift shops, craft shops and tea houses. The buildings housing these enterprises are remarkably preserved and part of the general atmosphere of the town. While visiting Richmond, is it imperative to see the Richmond Gaol (Jail). The penal institute is the oldest in Australia, and housed the convict labor that made the rest of the city’s construction possible. The jail and the keeper’s house are open to the public daily.

The convicts of Richmond built the oldest bridge in Australia. Richmond Bridge is an impressive structure constructed purely by convict labor. Many myths and legends circulate in the city about the bridge, most involving suicides and murders of both prisoners and guards during its construction.

Simply wandering down Bridge Street in Richmond will give you plenty to see and do. The historic buildings line the street and the wares of the local shops call out to you. Stop by the courthouse to see the impressive architecture that has survived intact since 1826.
