Tasmania is the largest of many islands off the coast of Australia. It is alive and well with much to see and do. Tasmania is said to have the purest air in the world, due to its low population and being surrounded by the waters of the Bass Strait, the Southern Ocean, and the Tasman Sea.  There are a wide variety of attractions in Tasmania including everything from exploring the wilderness and observing the wildlife to visiting the interesting shops, historic buildings, and towns.  The capital city of Hobart, built near the old convict colony of Port Arthur, overlooks a natural harbor surrounded by mountains.  Saturday morning market day at Salamanca Place in Hobart is the place for vendors and tourists to gather.  Here, old warehouses have been converted to shops, pubs, and restaurants and shoppers can socialize and purchase artwork, wool, wood, Bridestowe lavender, or hundreds of other items.  Richmond, the oldest town in Australia and a 30-minute drive from Hobart, features the Peppercorn Art Gallery.  The Gallery houses everything from handmade jewelry and woven wall hangings to pottery and paintings by local artists.  Tasmania is a place of unspoiled natural beauty with its varying landscapes, ranging from quiet white sandy beaches, wild mountain peaks and lush dense rainforests.  This is all topped with some of Australians best food and wine.

The World Heritage Area of Tasmania, one of the largest conservation areas in Australia, is the wilderness habitat of many rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.  This is a nature lover’s paradise, an area that attracts thousands of visitors each year.  Rock climbers, hikers, and backpackers discover the beauty of the mountains and forests rising above the farms and villages of the peaceful countryside.  Tourists visit Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair and Franklin-Gordon Wild River National Parks, large areas of forest trails, 250 flowering eucalyptus trees, the tallest in the world, and home to many varieties of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, and the nocturnal Tasmanian devil that exists only on this island.  Others spend time exploring the Marakoopa and King Solomon Caves in Mole Creek Karst National Park, or fly-fishing and water activities on its many lakes.

Where to stay on the island is never a problem with numerous B & Bs, resorts, hotels, and cottages catering to tourism in Tasmania.  Lodges and cabins are available throughout the wilderness areas and along the coastal regions, as well as homes and apartments for rent in Hobart, Coles Bay, Strahan, and Launceston.

Airline flights to Tasmania are available primarily to Melbourne, the departure point for the ferry to the island; a few airlines fly into Sydney.  One-way tickets from one city to another, Melbourne to Hobart or Launceston, for example, are often used.  The Spirit of Tasmania, the only ferry service to the island, leaves nightly from Melbourne and crosses the Bass Strait to Devenport.  Day trips are scheduled occasionally during peak periods.
