The Tamar Valley is a lush area rich with wildlife and culture. Renowned as the premiere wine region of Tasmania, it is blessed with world famous wine yards and producers that will satisfy any wine lover’s appetite. Coupled with the friendly locals, fine foods and postcard scenery; don’t be surprised if you find yourself lost in paradise in the North’s heartland

The Tamar Valley also borders the Tamar River that extends from Launceston to the Bass Strait.  Along the Tamar River, the shores are a perfect habitat for a wide variety of wild birds. The river is navigable for its entire length, and cruises are offered along the full length of the river to help visitors enjoy the richness of the land and scenery.

For those interested in exploring the natural birds of the region, Tamar Island offers a chance to walk through the natural wetlands without damaging the fragile ecosystem. The walk allows you to see the birds in their natural habitat. Along the river, Notley Gorge has fertile rainforests and ferns and waterfalls. To the north, fairy penguins are nesting and fur seals breed.

The wilderness of the Tamar Valley region blends beautifully with the area’s best known resource – wine. The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s most established and productive collection of vineyards. The vines may be domestically grown, but the rugged wilderness surrounding the farmlands lends its rich flavor to the end product.
