Approximately forty miles northwest of Launceston, Beaconsfield is one of Tasmania’s gold mining towns. The gold mines at Beaconsfield were active in 1877 and peaked in the early twentieth century. While twenty-six tons of gold were removed from the vein, the mine was closed after it was discovered to be unsafe. The mine shafts and other interesting artifacts of the region are still popular destinations today.

The Grubb Shaft Museum has a fine collection of ruins and reconstructed buildings from the Beaconsfield mine’s most successful days. The museum even includes some working models. Other popular attractions in the area include Auld Kirk, a freestone church built in 1843 as well as the Batman Bridge. The bridge’s 100 meters span the width of the Tamar River and is an impressive sight.

Originally known as Cabbage Tree Hill, Beaconsfield is surrounded by natural beauty. Area vineyards and the Holwell Gorge State Reserve surround the area with even more natural beauty. The Gorge incorporates a walk slightly less than four kilometers and passes three waterfalls in addition to the ferns native to the area.
