Sheffield Print E-mail

With a small population and much history, Sheffield is a must see in northwestern Tasmania. Thirty-four murals are located throughout town on the walls of local buildings, prompting Sheffield’s nickname, "town of murals." The murals showcase important aspects of the town’s history and create a walking museum when strolling through town.

Lake Barrington, a lake created by the damming of the Forth River, is a popular location for rowing, waterskiing and canoeing. In fact, the lake was once home to world championship rowing competitions. The lakefront also has an adventure playground and a family nature walk through the local rainforest. The walk takes approximately two hours. Devil’s Gate Dam to the north has terrific views of Mount Roland and the surrounding area from a suspension bridge.

In addition to other natural areas such as the thermal springs east of town and local vineyards, Sheffield is also able to boast the largest maze complex in the world – Tasmazia. The journey can be long, so visitors are urged to stock up on pancakes before beginning.
