Westbury Print E-mail

The most English of Tasmania’s towns, Westbury closely resembles a village in the United Kingdom. There is a village green, tree lined streets and courtyards as well as the requisite antique inns and stables. The assortment of historic buildings in the town is impressive and enough to keep many visitors busy for a day as they stroll through the city.

To continue the English feel, Westbury has a Maypole festival every autumn with Morris dancing. The homes in the town have been restored to their former glory and many are now open as museums. Artifacts are on display at homes such as the White House, and well cultivated gardens are a sight to behold at the Culzean. The gardens here have been carefully tended for over 150 years.

Directly off the Bass highway, the Westbury Maze entices many visitors. The hedge contains over 3000 privet bushes and also has an extensive display of natural rocks and minerals. Inside the city, Pearn’s Steam World has one of the largest collections of farm and mechanical equipment in the southern hemisphere. Many of the engines and machines date back well over one hundred years.
