Queenstown Print E-mail

Originally a mining town, Queenstown was developed to support the extraction of local minerals and gold. The veins were discovered in the 1880s and the town quickly grew to accommodate the miners and support industries. The mining efforts stripped the hills of trees and soil, and the interesting landscape that remains defines Queenstown today.

The mine is still functional and tours are available. A chairlift suspends visitors over the eroded landscape so that they may inspect the full impact of the years of mining. With so much of the local industry still contained in the mining efforts, Queenstown has the same frontier feel as it did 100 years ago. In fact, the city is a classified historic town. Also by the mines, the Wilderness Railway is a piece of living history. The unique rail design negotiates the steep inclines as you sit back and explore the rivers, bridges and mountains of western Tasmania.

Also in Queenstown, the Galley Museum offers a photographic journey through the development of Tasmania’s west coast. A heritage walk is available that guides visitors through a tour of the older, more interesting buildings of Queenstown history.
