Pontville Print E-mail

Slightly north of Hobart along the Heritage Highway, Pontville is a modern town that was once a garrison. The old Barracks, or Row, still stand from the mid nineteenth century and the unusual and far eastern names of the surrounding towns and landmarks make Pontville an interesting place to visit. A young solider was responsible for naming the Jordan River along with the towns of Baghdad and Jericho.

Regardless of the source of their name, the town of Pontville houses soldiers for a time as well as serving as an important stop for travelers along the road. There are many historic buildings and homes in and around town including The Barracks of the original garrison, The Old Post Office, and the original residence of the town – the Sheiling.

The most notable landmark of Pontville is the St. Marks Church of England. The Romanesque style church is unusual for the area and with its great attention to detail is a fine structure still in excellent condition today.
