Rosebery Print E-mail

Rosebery is located on the hillside in some of the most forbidding countryside in all of Tasmania. The area was full of thick timber, cold winds and dense underbrush which made it challenging to explore. One settler did stake a claim to the area, Tom McDonald, whose claim is now one of the largest mines in Tasmania.

Rosebery is a true mining town and has been since shortly after McDonald arrived. Gold was discovered quickly followed by lead and zinc. Copper followed soon afterward. Improvements were made in transportation of the ores and Pasminco Zinc Mine continues to support the local economy today.

Rosebery may be a mining town, but there is still plenty to see and do. Surface tours of the mine are available as well as the remnants of the aerial ropeway which was used to transport ore for decades. The surrounding mountains offer experienced hikers terrific views, but the weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to prepare adequately for even the shortest hike.
